A South African rum inspired by the humble braai. Because apparently our national obsession with setting wood on fire was eventually going to find its way into a bottle. MHOBA Bushfire Rum is an exceptionally distinctive, small batch, single estate sugarcane juice rum produced at MHOBA Distillery near Malalane, Mpumalanga.
Crafted entirely from freshly pressed sugarcane juice rather than molasses, it combines the naturally grassy, fruity and expressive character of pure cane rum with an unusual maturation technique inspired by South African braai culture. The secret is indigenous sickle bush (Dichrostachys cinerea), a dense hardwood prized locally for producing long burning braai coals.
Rather than relying on conventional oak barrels to develop its character, MHOBA matures Bushfire with charred staves split from sickle bush logs, imparting a distinctive smoky, woody and slightly savoury complexity to the spirit. The result is something rather unconventional. Fresh sugarcane, earthy vegetation and tropical fruit meet smouldering hardwood, gentle spice and a subtle sweetness.
It's a profile that sits somewhere between traditional cane juice rum and the smoky character often associated with mezcal or peated whisky, although Bushfire remains very much its own creation. Bottled at a robust 55% ABV, with no added sugar or artificial flavouring, this is an unapologetically characterful South African rum that showcases just how creative local distilling has become.
Tasting Notes Colour: Warm amber with copper-orange highlights. Nose: Freshly pressed sugarcane, grassy vegetation and ripe tropical fruit, followed by charred hardwood, resinous herbs, vanilla and a distinctive savoury smokiness reminiscent of glowing braai coals. Palate: Full-bodied and expressive.
Sweet cane juice and earthy, vegetal notes lead into grilled pineapple, burnt sugar and warming spice. The sickle bush influence introduces layers of charcoal smoke, black pepper and a slightly briny, herbal complexity. Finish: Long, warming and gently drying, with lingering wood smoke, pepper, sweet sugarcane and earthy spice.

Beyond the novelty, the use of indigenous sickle bush is a genuinely interesting approach to maturation, introducing a flavour profile that conventional oak simply cannot replicate. It's also an excellent introduction to South Africa's growing premium rum industry, particularly for enthusiasts who appreciate high-strength, unadulterated spirits with a strong sense of place.
If you're a fan of agricole style rum, funky Jamaican expressions, smoky mezcal or peated Islay whisky, Bushfire deserves a place on your radar. Best enjoyed neat, preferably after a braai. For research purposes, obviously.
